The Sanctuary / The Lounge / Re: Oh gosh, It's Roan again, with one of his annoying questions!

Oh, this is such a great question! Pokemon Yellow was my first and favourite, so I'd have to pick Kanto with Pikachu. After beating the Elite Four, I'd use the money to buy a falling-down little place outside of Lavender Town. I'd head into the city to buy cakes and tea regularly as well as to catch up on events, freaking out the townspeople because I have a freakin' Mewtwo with me. EDIT: Promoted this question to blog level because it was too brilliant not to share with the wider readership. Hope this is cool with you!

The Sanctuary / The Lounge / Re: What's your favourite type of tea?

My favorite is English breakfast in any of the common brands (Tetley, Scottish Blend, Twinings etc). But my second favorite is Chai. Twining's Chai is nice, but I have a real thing going on for Chai lattes and I've recently found my local supermarket stocking Chai latte mixes (I think the main difference from normal Chai is the sugar). This place does a nice Vanilla mix, but I love cinnamon so I'll need to pick up their Spiced Chai for a bit of stronger flavour. I recently found Celestial Seasoning's "Sleepytime" tea in the shops as well - keep meaning to try that one out, but I'm a milk-in-my-tea junkie and I'm not big on herbal mixes so it might take me a while to get around to it.

Welcome to the forum Roan. I also have a musical instrument graveyard. Your schooling system sounds great, very structured - and it's great to hear your study Greek and Latin. I can't think of any Scottish public schools that teach either, and I don't think the English schools do either. For sci-fi stories, I recommend Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" (Dutch translation: De tactiek van Ender) It has a lot of interesting things to say about war, but in a surprising way. A lot of good sci-fi is public domain (free to read) now as well. Here's a few I've heard good things about but haven't yet read: Little Fuzzy: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/18137The Time Machine (and anything by H.G.Wells, really): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/35I remember when Age of Mythology Collector's Edition came out, I saved up to buy it just for the soundtrack and minotaur figurine. Such a fantastic game, even if my PC at the time struggled to withstand it. You're never too old for Pokemon. I'm not huge on the anime anymore (but don't get me started on Digimon, that's a whole other story) but I'm still an avid player of the games - just finished White, and I'm trading with my friend and getting stupidly excited because I have a Mewtwo.

Is anyone here a member of the Steam gaming community/gaming on demand download system thing? It's a popular client used for downloading games at reasonable prices, organising online matches for games like Left For Dead, and chatting with friends. Give me an add if you use it. =) https://steamcommunity.com/id/emaree

The Sanctuary / 4th Wall Theatre / Sherlock!
|

21st century Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, with sharp, unique characters and expert takes on subjects like Holmes' sexuality (he's portrayed as an asexual, self-proclaimed high functioning sociopath and is realistically outcast for his attitude) and Watson's military hero persona (he's back from Afghanistan) without reducing him to a bumbling fool going "What's this? I say, Holmes! A clue!" as the TV adaptions tend to. It's smart and clever and really hard to describe without showing people it, but watch it and you'll be hooked. Also, it's written by the excellent Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss, with Watson played by Hitchiker's Guide to the galaxy movie actor Freeman who played Arthur Dent. I want to know why they got Davros to say 'silence will fall' but he never appeared once. I expected a least a cameo role where he casually wheeled himself along the background through a crowd at one point. Perhaps sitting in a bar with a rather old looking future doctor reminiscing about past battles, but nothing :O.
Was it definitely Davros saying that? Ugh. Not a big fan of Davros* or the new Daleks so that makes me :/ about the next arc. There's going to be two blocks of Doctor Who in 2011, which could be interesting, though I think it just means more cliffhanger fodder. I hope we get a more substantial ending this time... in retrospect, the finale didn't quite live up to its name. The acting was fantastic (especially Matt at Amy's bedside and "Something borrowed, something blue") but the escape from the Pandorica was a bit of a let-down, and I was generally a bit miffed at having all these plots foreshadowed and then having absolutely nothing resolved. I know there will be cliffhangers and unanswered questions, but I felt a bit like the finale had answered absolutely nothing about events so far. (*I read an article about stereotypes of disabilities making characters turn evil where Davros was highlighted and now I feel bad. )

I'm hooking the forum up to by Google Reader to make keeping track of things easier. I know what you mean about things changing with time, it's fun (but embarassing, sometimes) to look back on. Oh man, the puppet accounts. xD That was so silly! But hey. The roleplaying side was still fun even if it never got off the ground. I find it kind of awesome to watch some of our members writing styles and grammar evolving, from basic chatspeak-type things to what they have now. That's a bit geeky, I guess? My styles changed markedly too - I'm not going to check back for fear of the amount of kawaii desu I may find back there. There's been a big change from school to exams and then Uni as well, and everyone's traveling and partying!

Hi Joao, good to hear from you. Your signature image looks good. It's not very often I hear for Portuguese readers. The summer weather must be lovely over there!

The Sanctuary / 4th Wall Theatre / Doctor Who 2010 and 11th Doctor Matt Smith

Hi guys! The new series of Doctor Who has started. What's everyone thinking about it? There will be spoilers for aired episodes in this topic.I've been a bit underwhelmed so far - the characterization and dialogue is great, but the monsters and storyline not so good, and Matt is still very rough in the role. I'm waiting for writer Moffat to kic it into high gear soon, though. I trust him. xD I talked about the first episode here and the second episode here.

So, what are everyone's thoughts on The Waters of Mars?
My first thought: eeee David Tennant is back on our tellybox eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee <3 <3
My second thoughts went a bit like this:
[SPOILERS]
The first half was very slow, and frustrating in that the Doctor did so little it felt almost like a cameo appearance. His whole role was basically just standing there going 'Why am i here I can't do anything this is pointless'. Well, Doctor, why are you here if you can't do anything? It did seem pointless.
However, it really kicked into high gear for the second half. It was smarter and darker, echoing both Stephen Moffat and Russel T Davies at their best. I admit to getting a bit teary-eyed in the more emotional moments, when the water started getting through and one of the trapped women had her kids up on the screen.
The Tenth Doctor had a big character change throughout the episode - from uncharacteristically conflicted and hesitant to a confident, daredevil attitude that was definitely 'The Timelord Victorious'. Then it switched to something much darker and far less likeable - a mood that, as much as I hated it, I hope to see continued into the Christmas special because it really summed up a lot about the Doctor's dangerous personality without a companion to tell him when to stop.
Probably my only problem with the episode was the suicide - it was a Torchwood kind of dark, and it bugged me because unlike some of the series' prior dark moments, it was very in-your-face about it. It's not something where a parent can just go 'Oh, it's fine' and come up with an explanation. You can't hand-wave a muzzle flash and gunshot. (Though you can hand-wave fire on Mars, if you're Russel T Davies.)
All in all, I'm really looking forward to the Christmas special, especially now they're bringing together my three favourite characters - the Tenth Doctor, Donna and John Simm's Master. =D
Then there's the Children in Need clip. I really didn't like it, and neither did Dave. I understand they were trying to make the Doctor seem completely off-kilter and afraid of facing up to his impending death, but what they ended up with was some horribly forced humor that completely wrecked any attempts at suspense or atmosphere.
I'm hoping the earlier scenes (according to Wikipedia, the scenes shown were after the titles and there are some scenes before the titles) will make the mood fit a bit better.

Good to see you guys haven't deserted. We're all back and running fine after sorting things out after the attack. I'm still trying to get a shoutbox working though, raaaah. xD EDIT: We have a shoutbox! Feel free to let me know what you think of it either in the shoutbox or here. I've also changed the default theme to Kani - a few people found the old theme too dark, so hopefully this one will work better for everyone. =)
