  • Triss: A group of us from the LARP society I'm part of decided to put on a role-playing convention, catering to roleplayers of all types from tabletop to LARP, so we got in a whole load of traders and people promoting their groups and stuff. There's quite a big, active RP community in the north-east, so we thought we'd tap into that. So 'Nerd East' was born! Cheesy

Hi everybody,

My username's Ronsogoras, on other forums and some other places I used to be known as Legendroanw, and you may call me Roan, by my in real life name. (although I will of course react on all three)

I'm a 16 years old male. (1995, 04th of June)
I'm from the Netherlands, and my hometown is Helmond, although I was born in Eindhoven. (not far from Helmond, I lived in Eindhoven for a year or so)

I'm not all that interested in football/soccer. I don't play any music instruments, (sadly, although my instrument graveyard is pretty big Sad ) and I do sport, I'm training to become a lifeguard, water part and theory part, (mainly for pools and smaller lakes, but also a tiny bit of beach lifeguard.)

At school, I'm a vwo student.
Our school system is quite different from the English one. we've got 2 years of nursery school, built in in our 8 years of primary school. after that we go to secondary school, which is usually 6 years. from the first year in secondary, we start working to a diploma that gets us into university. our school also teaches Greek and Latin for our Gymnasium students. after having been a vwo student for 3 years, I decided to catch up with Greek during summer holiday, so now I'm following Greek lessons with the rest of the Gymnasium class. Next to that, our school offers Cambridge Advanced English lessons from the ESOL, which guarantees us that we may studie at universities abroad. (I'm having those lessons as well.)

I'm interested in Greek Mythology, some Egyptian Mythology, reading, and Games. (Board and computer)
The types of Books I like: Fantasy, Dragon Tamers, Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, The Kane Chronicles, and older fantasy like Allice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan and Roald Dahl's books.

I'm also interested in Radioplays and Audiobooks. Most I of the ones I was able to find were duch, but in English I've found (and liked): Some from Roald Dahl, and "Journey into Space." (which is nearly the only likeable Sci-fi I've found up till now. I like Sci-Fi stories, but I don't like them when the story doesn't matter half as much as the alien violance to the author.)

Games: I really love "Age of mythology" together with it's expansion set : "The Titans". Next to that, I also like Pokemon (mainly Generation 1, 2 and 3.) and Yu-gi-oh. (I liked mainly everything before GX)(I know I may be a little old for this Roll Eyes... but I still like it)

I also love Code Lyoko  Grin Grin Grin
I made these avatars for my account on the Code Lyoko United forums, but I'll put them here as well in attachments.

Roan.

Welcome to the forum Roan. Smiley

I also have a musical instrument graveyard. Sad

Your schooling system sounds great, very structured - and it's great to hear your study Greek and Latin. I can't think of any Scottish public schools that teach either, and I don't think the English schools do either.

For sci-fi stories, I recommend Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" (Dutch translation: De tactiek van Ender) It has a lot of interesting things to say about war, but in a surprising way.

A lot of good sci-fi is public domain (free to read) now as well. Here's a few I've heard good things about but haven't yet read:

Little Fuzzy: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/18137
The Time Machine (and anything by H.G.Wells, really): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/35

I remember when Age of Mythology Collector's Edition came out, I saved up to buy it just for the soundtrack and minotaur figurine. Such a fantastic game, even if my PC at the time struggled to withstand it.

You're never too old for Pokemon. I'm not huge on the anime anymore (but don't get me started on Digimon, that's a whole other story) but I'm still an avid player of the games - just finished White, and I'm trading with my friend and getting stupidly excited because I have a Mewtwo. Cheesy

Cool, Thanks for the sites, I've been looking for stuff like this for ages! I also have a copy of pokemon white, but after the 3rd or 4th badge I ran out of time, because of school, other games and I still have a large heap of books to read. Cheesy

next to all that, I've been thinking about the idea of learning how to program in c++. I have found a tutorial site, http://www.cppgameprogramming.com/cgi/nav.cgi?page=index but the compiler they use (Dev-C++) doesn't seem to work on my pc. after that I tried Microsoft Visual studio 2010 express, but that one was too hard. Do you know a good and free one I can use for learning? (I'm not in any rush though, I only have some time during the weekends, and perhaps a half maybe a full hour)

Hello new person! Welcome to the forum!  Grin

I'm really interested in ancient mythology too - I find Norse mythology to be really cool, although Greek mythology is wonderful as well. So many stories! So much drama!

Have you done programming before? I code, but unfortunately only in PHP and Python at the moment, so I couldn't recommend a good compiler. Still, have fun learning! Smiley

I too have a huge pile of books to read, and keep making the mistake of buying more when I haven't finished my current pile yet...

Hi Triss,

I havn't the slightest experience with programming yet.  Cry

Norse myth. is pretty cool as well. Have you tried Age Of Mythology before as well? If you haven't (and you've got time), you really should. If you like I could find you some free downloads via YouTube descriptions.
And your problem with buying more and more books if you still got a whole pile left, is one that troubles me too. But I've found a solution that works a little for me. First I decide whether it's a book I'd like to read more than the rest in the pile or not. Next I'd try to find out if it's a book that's new, and that'd be easy to find again, or if it's one of those really old and good ones that are hared too find even second hand.
This usually works, but doesn't always. Daughter of Smoke and Bone skipped no.2  Undecided. But I've got to say it was an awesome book Grin! I hope there'll be a second installment soon.
