I've been busy doing this Summer School for Access to Uni thing. For the past week or two I have had at least one big essay per week(by big I mean 1500 words, so not massive but still a fair bit for a weekly essay) got one due Monday this week and another due Friday

A group of us from the LARP society I'm part of decided to put on a role-playing convention, catering to roleplayers of all types from tabletop to LARP, so we got in a whole load of traders and people promoting their groups and stuff. There's quite a big, active RP community in the north-east, so we thought we'd tap into that. So 'Nerd East' was born!

Firstly, I'd just like to say what absolute torture it was being away for the final two episodes...
Seriously. Here are just a few of the things that annoyed me Who-wise over my holiday.
People sent me texts saying "OMG t Dctr is regenratin!" and I was like 'WHAT?! SHUT UP! I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT LEAVE ME ALONE!'
The French, while hating their royal family generally (quite rightly, bunch of scumbags, probably deserved to be guillotined, now lets all watch Les Miserables) are TOTALLY obsessed with Madame de Pompadour. Possibly because, while wealthy, she wasn't herself royal and just wandered in and showed them all up for the lazy good-for-nothings they were. Anyway, she's everywhere, and of course I see her and immeadiately think 'Ah, banana daquiries! and What's Pre-Revolutionary France doing on a Space ship?! *wanders off giggling, getting funny looks from the French*"
Signs such as this one:
just sitting at the sides of woodland paths. How are Whovians supposed to keep an eye on what kind of lizard they've stepped on when suddenly their inner geekdom starts fighting to get out?
And my personal favorite, finding out that they do have Doctor Who in France up to 'Saison Trois'. But not only have they not translated the title (I wanted it to be 'Médecin Qui'!) they also don't translate TARDIS, although actually I sat and realised that in French it would be Temps Et Dimension Relatif Dans Espace so...TEDRDE. Which is hard to say. They also randomly decided that perhaps the idea of a 900 year old alien with two hearts travelling through time and space was a bit far-fetched - so although there are two availiable translations of it ('Doctor Who' and 'Docteur Who') one of them decides to make him 750. I'm not joking, alors, a quote from Amazon.fr
Quote
Synopsis
Which roughly tranlated means:
Synopsis
Aged 750 years, Doctor Who always has the appearance of a man, dynamic, courageous, funny, but he is though an extra-terrestrial. His birth planet, Gallifrey, has been destroyed. He is the sole survivor and must be like this the last Lord of time (Time-Lord). On board the Tardis, he travels in times and space and goes to settle numerous problems in the universe, combat monsters and most importantly always save the Earth. The blonde (Something to do with earth, I think it means roughly 'Earth-girl'), Rose, seller of lingerie in a large London shop, follows in his perilous missions, always also suprising, what will be yesterday, today, tomorrow, here, there, somewhere...some part of the universe...Even more adventures, suspense, aliens.
My favorite thing of all though? The terrible dubbing...
I love how they've tried so hard to follow the original erm...modulation and dynamics of the voices and then suddenly right at the end you clearly hear Tennants original 'Brrr!'. Genius!
Anyway..to buisness...
And the worst thing is, although I saw them hardly a week ago now...I'm struggling to recall parts. They just weren't memorable for me, or rather not as memorable as previous finales have been (maybe I'm disillusioned due to the joy that was last years)
I felt it tried to do too much - give Rose a suitable end, bring Mickey back, get rid of Harriet Jones ("YES...WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE!" was quite funny though), introduce Sarah-Jane's son and Mr Smith to all of us who hadn't seen 'The Sarah-Jane Adventures', bring in the Torchwood crew, get Martha going, along with the idea of there being two Doctors (which admittendly I wasn't keen on before Tennant saved it by being a brilliant human-doctor, helped by Catherine Tate: "Watch it, Space-Man!" "Watch it, Earth-Girl!" "OI!" "OI!" "OI!" - fantastic), and then Donna's good but really depressing end. All with Daleks as well.
Madness.
But I will say, I did get rather overexcited and giggly when it was all coming together and everyone was meeting everyone else and it was all going to be bloody marvellous. But I think because there was so much going on that it was really jumpy: Donna's in the Tardis which is about to be burned, Martha's in Germany with Daleks(which as has already been said was gold), Jack's in the incinerator, the Doctor and Rose are stuck in those weird tube things, Gwen and Ianto are stuck in Torchwood, Mickey and Jackie are hiding from being killed (sorry, evaporated into atoms), anyone we've missed? Oh, Sarah-Jane's with them as well. And now Davros.
I enjoyed it, I just thought it could have been better. And I thought the whole Doctor-Rose-Martha-Jack thing could finally be sorted: Rose gets original, Martha gets new boy, Jack gets DoctorDonna, everyone's happy. But no. although I did quite like "You're the only one who can make him better ROSE!"
Even though we still didn't find out just what he said...I punched my own leg in anger.
And was it just me or was Dalek Caan HIL-AR-IOUS! He had the most unconvincing voice ever and seemed to be being controlled by a puppeteer with hiccups! "Theeeeeeee TimeLORD's Sec-KRET *JERK!* ARrrrrrrrrrrrrr....MEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEE *JERK AND FLAIL!* wiiiiiiiiiillll"
and after that I don't know what he said because I was laughing too much...
And now the countdown to Christmas begins as we wonder if the Cybermen returning again will be good or sadly disappointing...
EDIT: While I'm here, the rumour about Robert Carlyle. It' not true, it's been going around for a while (Since Tennant took the role basically) and in all interviews I've read where it came up (all of one actually) he said that no one had appraoched him in any way and he didn't know where the idea had come from.
Not sure about karo's dislike of him - he's really good in Trainspotting, The Full Monty, 28 Weeks Later etc. and my personal favorite of all the distressing films we ever watched in RE, 'To End All Wars' the true story of the Scottish PoWs during WW2 forced to build the railway to Burma by the Japanese. It's really quite good if you ever get to see it...

But yeah, it's all a lie...

Can't say I'm a fan of French dubbing - the accents are too similar between genders and the dubbing is downright lazy at parts near the beginning of the clip, just letting the words continue past the lips or stop before it.
'Gallyfrii' is love, though. xD

Heh... I really don't think we needed too - even bringing it up again was a bit unnecessary. You know what was said. :]

^Yes but the point is how he said it! The tone, the rise and fall of his voice, the gentle look of his eyes and my word I really do need help for this incurable romanticness....
French dubbing always sucks when it comes to lengths of sentences, they tend to use far more words to express the same thing. Seriously, I'll try to transpose the English and French versions of just the beginnings of that scene for comparison.
English
J: So Doctor, who is he? How come the ancient society of Timelords created a psychopath?
M:And what is he to you, like a collegue or...?
D: A friend, at first.
M: I thought you were going to say he was your secret brother or something...
D: You've been watching too much TV.
J: But all the legends of Gallifrey, it sounds so perfect.
D: Well, perfect to look at maybe. And it was, it was beautiful...
English syllables: 96
French syllables: roughly 117 (allowing for bad transposition)
This might explain their wanton abuse of the art of lipsyncing in favor of just fitting it all in.
Mildly interested in the occaisional cultural shifts in translation. Martha doesn't say 'secret brother' but 'hidden brother' and instead of being 'perfect to look at maybe' it's 'perfect from the outside maybe'
Not tha this serves any purpose to anyone, it's just mildly interesting...

I found that pretty interesting. 'Perfect from the outside maybe' is a fairly gorgeous way of saying it.

Locking this topic now as we go on to a new lot of episodes.
If anyone's wanting to pot after re-watching eps or anything, if you have a good question, post a topic. I don't mind people posting plenty of topics as long as they're interesting. xD
