As you know I played a gig last weekend.  We are already planning the next one and we are going to add an instrumental jam, so I thought since I like making my own ones up, which tend to be blues, I would get some opinions on what people like to hear.  I mean we can play what we like but it will be rubbish if no one likes it.

Rock personally, but to be honest, it's your band, your style, play what you like!

In rock though, I tend to like prog rock more than anything else.

I don't believe you should limit yourself to any one type of music. That's why I hit mixed, as I tend to enjoy a bit of everthing ecept possibly hiphop, RnB and dance. Because...no, just no.

basically, I agree with Nick. Down to the not liking hip-hop, dance and R&B. Ugh.

exactly.  I believe that as well(even though I selected Blues)... if you choose one you will eventually run out of ideas and get bored of music... if everyone believed that their would be no such thing as a music genre.  If you chose one specific thing to play then you will not be able to experiment... hell that is why I quite often use a spoon to play the guitar.  Because I had this theory that proved correct, with a regular plectrum you get one sound depending on how thick the plectrum is... with a spoon you get at least 4 sounds depending on which part of the spoon you use.

Well I have no idea who John Lee Hooker is, and Brian May is so awesome that he has earned the right to play with whatever he damn well pleases and be perfectly normal. Tongue

I'm just kidding, but it's not that I have anything against playing a guitar with unusual plectrum-like objects, it's just that a spoon would be pretty amusing to see, is all.

Is Green Say a typo? Tongue

Personally, my love is for catchy, rock and pop-rock riffs but I have a fondness for rock or metal solos as well. Aaaaand I love a good bit of acoustic.

I'm a sucker for unusual rhythms and time signatures. An band which can play a good song in 5/4 earns my instant respect (I've only heard two so far, unfortunately).

Triss - any advice on how to recognise the time a piece is being played in? It's not something I can do and I wish I could.

Karo - Can you not edit polls? I thought all users had that ability.

yeah I can edit it,

It's quite a hard thing to explain, but I listen to whatever is being used for rhythm, like the drums.

But certain styles of music stereotypically play in a certain time signature, like reggae tends to be 4/4 beat.

Blues is usually 4/4 or 12/8, you can work it out that way.

their are other things as well.

Eventually I think I'll try to learn drumming, which might help a bit. =]
