There's quite a big, active RP community in the north-east, so we thought we'd tap into that. So 'Nerd East' was born! Cheesy

Wind by Akeboshi is in 3+2/8 timing I think =D It's weird. Confused the hell out of me when I was learning it (considering I was failtastic at music at the time). My BEGINNER FLUTE BOOK has loads of 5/4 time signatures in it. Still, at least I can vaguely play in it now Grin

Yeah, Wind by Akeboshi was one of the songs I was thinking of (a small part of Innuendo by Queen is the other). I don't know how to tell exactly, probably best to clap along with the beat, then try to figure out which is the first or main beat and count from there. More often than not you can tell a five beat piece because it alternates between two and three beats.

The World of Warcraft main theme is in 7/8, which I only figured out because I was stuck on the login screen for ages once, having forgotten my password. After about three loops of the theme, I realised there was something a little unusual about the rhythm, so I started counting. Tongue

one thing I didn't mention is you can also work it out by listening to the length of the last beat,

if their is a rest at the start then their has to be a bar at the end with one note in it to make up for the value of the rests at the start, else the time signature would not be correct.

Money by Pink Floyd is in 7/something.

edit:
Oh, and apparently, March of the Pigs by NIN is effectively in 29/8.

Argueably one of the most well known pieces in 5/4 time is 'Take 5'
Damn it's catchy!

Generally if I have to count time I do a lot of tapping, and usually I'm just checking for compound/simple time (beats get split into 3 sub-beats in compound time and two in simple time). But unusual time signatures like 5/4, 7/4, 9/8 etc. just tend to utterly confuse me.

Actually, interesting point, which could be entirely an urban myth, the use of these unusual signatures often gives a sense of movement and agitatedness and so the british landline telephone ring is written in 5/4 (or possibly 7/4) time so the gap between rings is mildly annoying and you go answer it. That may or may not be true, but it's pretty interesting all the same.

Correct, although that doesn't count for pauses at the end of songs, which is fairly common.

@MSB: 29/8?? Prize for being the most insane time signature I've heard of yet! xD Not a fan of NIN myself, but I'm going to have to hear that.

@Nick: Ooooh, I'm sure our school dance band attempted Take Five once, although we've never performed it. And I'm going to be listening hard next time I hear an ordinary telephone ring now, but not at our house - our phone has Mozart's Turkish Rondo as its ringtone. I like Mozart and all, but it seriously gets annoying!

Maybe, but it's only in 4/4.
