It’s April Fools, which means, aside from rampant viruses and occasionally funny pranks, it’s the first day of Script Frenzy.
What is Script Frenzy? It’s the challenge to write 30 pages (approx. 20k) of script in 30 days; and it’s awesome.
Linked to November’s National Novel Writing Month, which challenges participants to write an entire novel in a month, it doesn’t seem like much.
But for the majority of participants who’ve never done a screenplay before, it’s all about experimenting…
My project is an adaptation of the in-progress novel “The Patron Saint of Suicide”. I’m evening out the ease of word count by adding in an extra dash of difficulty – the novel I’m adapting only has the first few chapters complete, so to make up the script, I’m going to need to work on the novel alongside it.
It’s a project I’m very, very excited to start – the story of a teen-aimed tradgedy, not too far from the “Romeo and Juliet” in darkness and “Bang Bang You’re Dead” in controversial content.
It takes a honest look at a society of kids growing up (if they grow up) feeling apathetic and disconnected, without meaning or purpose. It’s about those who chose to end it, those who don’t, and why.
It’s dark and brutal and honest – and it’s a piece I want to see out there in the world.
To warm up, in a practice that the stricter ruels of NaNoWriMo would frown upon, 12 pages and 2,440 words have already been written. None of that will count for the final score.
All in all, it’s going to be fun. *grins*
