What’s Up Wednesday is a weekly post, created by blog friends Jaime and her sister Erin!
What I’m Reading
This week has been focussed on adjusting to the new job, so I haven’t had much time for reading or writing. I’m currently reading LIVES OF TAO and BLOOD AND FEATHERS: REBELLION.
What I’m Writing
As above, writing time has been slim on the ground. However I’ve got a few short stories under my belt, and edits on DIVIDE THE SKY continue at a smooth pace. I should be past page 100 within the next few days, fingers crossed.
What Inspires Me Right Now
Have you heard of the WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE podcast? If you haven’t listened to it, and you have a fondness for good podcasts, good storytelling, and/or horror, go give it a listen. It is the best podcast I’ve ever listened to. I love it, and it makes quite a change to my usual travelling to work/doing housework soundtracks.
What Else I’ve Been Up To
New workplace is full of ridiculously healthy people, which is a powerful motivational factor…
I walked 3 miles on my lunch the other day. In a cardigan. In 30 degrees celsius. Trying to keep pace with said healthy people. I nearly DIED. Okay, I didn’t, but I was VERY WARM.
This week I also had one of those moments where friend circles overlap (this doesn’t happen often — my circles like to circle within their own circles, generally. Circles.), and it worked out wonderfully.
New friends meeting old friends is always a lot of fun.
How’s your week been, tiny dancers?

Subtle like a brick to the head…

I need to write some short stories. I’m using the excuse that I’m editing the WIP so I don’t have time, but writing a short story isn’t like starting a new novel, so it’s a pretty lame excuse (at least for me).
Congrats on the new job–I presume it’s a good thing? I mean, okay, getting an agent and a lucrative publishing deal would be the best of “new full-time jobs,” but aside from that… :)
And while 30C (86F) would not be considered ludicrously warm here in North Carolina (the high today is supposed to be 34C, and hovering around 30C all week–as it has been for about a month or so now), I know in the UK that’s particularly hot. And since you guys don’t have to put up with that kind of weather for long periods of time, your houses are not equipped with air conditioning. So you have my sympathy.
Stay cool and hydrated, Emma! :)

I avoided short story writing for ages, but once you get into the swing of it it’s good fun. (And it doen’t distract from writing big projects much — I tend to get ‘bursts’ of short story writing and then switch back to the WIP.)
It’s a good thing indeed. :) Lots more career opportunities and better treatment.
Yeah, the aircon is the main issue — lots of people die in these heatwaves because there’s almost nowhere aircon cooled to escape to (especially for the elderly and young). We’re also not used to the heat and don’t act properly in it — a memorable example I heard was Brits opening the windows on an aircon cooled train, letting in the heat.

Yeah, the lack of AC has been a real pain these past couple of weeks ^^; But, um, yay exercise?
Good luck with the edits!
EMaree says
Thanks, I’m needing it!

Short stories is something I really want to work a bit more on. Maybe when I’ve got plenty first drafts finished and I’m slowly editing them. :)
EMaree says
Oh editing, you are so slow. So very, very slow…
