What I’m Reading
If you’ve been following my Twitter, where I am infinitely more interesting and witty than here, you might have seen me fangirlnig about Laura Lam‘s new novella, THE SNAKE CHARM.
Here’s my Amazon review:
Oh, man, I loved this little story. It reads a lot like a smaller scale version of “Pantomime”: a quick read (maybe 2 hours, depending on your reading speed) but with the same twists, turns, atmosphere and fight scenes.
It’s also completely standalone, and if you haven’t read Laura’s “Pantomime” I’d read this first — it adds even more depth to the circus members.
I’m now reading J.B. Rockwell’s BREAKSHIELD, and I’ll fangirl more about that this time next week. But I want you to know that it contains adorable foxes.
What I’m Writing
Still revising. In that odd little point of space and time where ideas take shape about of absolutely nowhere, and plot issues seem to just unknot themselves in the moments when I’m doing nothing much at all.
It’s a strange and magical part of the process, though it’s all frustrating as all hell because there’s no way to predict it and no way to speed it up.
What Inspires Me
Procrastination, for all its faults, seems to be inspiring me at the moment. Brain down-time is important.
Also, this comic should strike a chord with all writers:
Source is this artist. (Page autoplays music.)
What Else I’ve Been Up To
On a running break to recover from some minor ailments, and I’m on a driving lesson break while my instructor goes on holiday, so there’s not much to talk about here.
I’ve been posting little dairies of my running training so far, and you can read PART ONE and PART TWO if you’re interested in the foibles of a newbie runner.
Just writing and reading. And sneezing.

…Poor, old characters. Sorry, various fictional people who live in my head! Hayden, put that gun down! No, no, no, I… AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!
EMaree says
Oh my god, hahaha. :D
Emma Adams says
I really enjoyed both Pantomime and Shadowplay, so I’ll have to check out The Snake Charm!
I know what you mean about those in-between stages – it’s when your subconscious is untangling things and taking its time about it, and all you can do is wait! Hopefully it’ll all sort itself out soon!
Love that cartoon! Hahaha.
EMaree says
Glad it’s not just me! :)

Thanks for sharing your review. And aww that comic :P

Love that fox gif! So cute! I agree with you that the brain needs some down time. Especially when you’re in the thick of revisions. That’s been my experience, anyway. Hope you have a great week, Emma!

The kids at school keep asking me why I’m crying all the time. Blasted hayfever is tormenting me with itchy eyes that won’t stop watering. I might as well glue myself to tissues at the moment.
Laurie Dennison says
Isn’t it terrible to be sick in the summer? I’ve been dealing with that myself. Good luck with your revising!

Hi Emma,
The Snake Charm sounds amazing, I’ll be sure to check it out! I also found one with a great plot so far, Far Rock Away by Charlie Fletcher. When I read the blurb it kind of reminded me of Inkheart, a series I fell in love with a few years back, and even though this is quite different It’s rather captivating. It does remind me I need to catch up on classics like The Last Of The Mohicans though…
I understand how much you suffer from dying characters… Attack on Titan had a lot of that, and Homestuck was especially horrible in that department… (don’t start on that last one untill you have a huge amount of time on your hands… its very confusing, the humour isn’t that great in the beginning, and it has quite a slow start… Some people call it the Ulysses of the internet…)
I hope your hayfever will clear up soon! Allergy-pills from the brand Allerfree usually do the trick for me, perhaps you could try those out if you haven’t found good ones yet.
