What I’m Reading
Just finished my buddy Jen‘s latest, and excellent, sci-fi WIP. It was brilliant. But it’s also unreleased, so I can’t tell you too much about it. Darn.
What I’m Writing
Futzing about with the Hella Fun WIP lately, which is steadily finding its legs, and brainstorming a potential fun NaNoWriMo project. Nothing too serious right now since I’m being kept busy with house stuff.
What Works For Me
Whoa, it’s my first time with this new section title!
Symmetry
I was just talking about this with a writing buddy, so it makes sense to bring it up here too. One thing I find crucial about writing is to have a sense of symmetry — the end should echo the beginning, key moments are often reversals of earlier actions, and chapters should ideally begin and end with a sense of connection.
The chapter ending advice in particular comes from Maggie Stiefvater’s amazing breakdown of her revision/edit of THE SCORPIO RACES. That’s one of my favourite, most useful, writing resources.
What Else I’ve Been Up To
HOUSEHUNTING aka the reason I’ve been hella busy and haven’t been blogging so much.
Things are finally close to a finish.
(That’s a sold sign, by the way!)

I know what you mean about symmetry! The sooner you know your ending, the stronger your book will be. That closing element has to be so much a part of the entire story.
Best of luck with house hunting! We just built and moved into a new place, so we were there not too long ago. Here, take some cheese.
EMaree says
Yeah, that’s why I prefer to have an ending in mind before I start. Thanks for stopping by!

The idea of symmetry is a good one! I should take a look at my current outline and see if I can work more of that in! Thanks!

Does the sold sign mean you guys found a house? If so, congrats! I’m all about symmetry, but hadn’t really thought about it in terms of writing. Definitely something to think about there. Have a great week, Emma!
EMaree says
Correct! We found a house. :D It’s very exciting.

I love that post of Maggie Stiefvater’s! It’s always interesting to read about other writers’ processes.
Best of luck with the househunting! :)

Eeeeeeeeee how exciting with the house stuff!!! :D :D :D
EMaree says
SO EXCITING :D But so tiring!

I love “Hella Fun WIP” – so much more thrilling than your regular type! Also, that revision post by Maggie has been a godsend for a lot of my previous WIPs – sometimes it’s draw on experience from those more published and world renowned than us :P
Also, exciting times with the househunting, it looks like! Best of luck with all of it! Have a great week :)
