It’s International Women’s Day! This is a big day for me in the IT industry, which still has some severe problems. It’s also a big day in the reading and writing communities, which have long had problems with their treatment of women.
So here’s twenty women writers I am really, really excited to read:
Laura Lam’s “Masquerade”: The Micah Grey trilogy is reaching it’s end, and as heartbreaking as it is to say goodbye to these lovely characters, I’m really looking forward to reading the finale!
N.K. Jemisin and narrator Robin Miles’ “The Obelisk Gate”: This was an audiobook favourite last year and I’m so excited to read more from this world.
Naomi Novik‘s “Blood of Tyrants”: This year I’ll be finishing the Temeraire series with the read-along group, and though it’s had its ups and downs I’ll be sorry to leave this world behind.
Robin Hobb’s “Assassin’s Apprentice”: I’ve never read any Robin Hobb. I know, I’m a monster, and I’ll be fixing this very soon.
V.E. Schwab’s “A Conjuring of Light”, “Our Dark Duet” and “Vicious”: V.E. is fast racing up there as one of my favourite writers, and I’m really excited to finish the Darker Shade of Magic trilogy, continuing the This Savage Song series and try out her villain book.
Zen Cho’s “Sorcerer to the Crown” is on my desk right now, shiny and fresh out of the library. I had heard so many great things about this modern, fiercely feminist version of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and I’m really excited to read it.
Ann Leckie‘s “Ancillery Justice”: I’ve heard this compared a lot to J.B.Rockwell’s “Serengeti” series, so I’m excited to delve into another book about AI warships.
Kameron Hurley‘s “The Stars Are Legion”: I love her blogs and don’t read anywhere near enough of her fiction, so I’m looking forward to starting.
Jen William‘s “The Ninth Rain” and “The Iron Ghost”: I loved The Copper Promise but haven’t yet had the chance to continue the series, and I’m also really intrigued by Jen’s new series!
Emma Newman’s “The Split Worlds”: Love her podcast but haven’t yet read her books. I need to fix this!
Becky Chamber‘s “The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet”: Every single lady I know has raved about this book, and I just found out it has some fantastic non-binary rep too, so I am itching to read it.
Jacqueline Carey‘s Phedre Trilogy: I really, really must get back to these after the amazingness of Kushiel’s Dart.
Sarah J. Maass and narrator Elizabeth Evans ‘ “Throne of Glass” series: I’m listening to Heir of Fire right now nad loving this world.
Leigh Bardugo‘s “Six of Crows”: Loved the Grisha books so I’m looking forward to listening to the ensemble audio production of the book so many folks are raving about.
Maggie Stiefvater‘s “The Dream Thieves”: I AM SO BEHIND ON THIS SERIES, my goodness. Really need to catch up with The Raven Cycle.
Laini Taylor‘s “Days of Blood & Starlight”: Another great series I’m super behind on.
Elizabeth Gilbert‘s “Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear”: It looks so fantastic, and it seems to be a big inspriation and confidence boost for writers.
Seanan McGuire and narrator Mary Robinette-Kowal’s “An Artificial Night”: I loved the October Daye audiobooks last year and I realllly need to catch up, because omg, Tybalt.
Mary Robinette-Kowal‘s “Shades of Milk and Honey”: Regency-era magic. I’ve been a fan of Mary’s for a while through Writing Excuses, and I recently enjoyed her Forest of Memory novella, so I’m really looking forward to reading her books.
Yana Toboso‘s “Black Butler” manga series: It’s easy to overlook manga, a hugely female-dominated industry, on International Women’s Day… but this is one of my favourite reads of the moment and I’m excited to continue my reading from Volume 3 onwards.
Which of these books should I put to the top of my TBR pile? Let me know below in the comments or on Twitter!

A great selection of books. Several there I want to read. And, like you, I’ve yet to read Robin Hobb, although I’ve got Assassin’s Apprentice in my TBR pile, as well.
Got The Stars Are Legion, and looking forward to reading it. Also eager to read the final instalment of Laura Lam’s Micah Grey series. However, I cannot recommend Becky Chambers enough, both A Long Way, and the sequel, which is very different, but equally brilliant. I’ve read A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet twice now, and it’s even better the second time round, so my vote would be that for the top of the pile.
Happy reading.

Ancillary Justice. (Although the one you got from the library, really, because it needs to go back). Small Angry Planet is near the top of mine, as is Serengeti II. It would have been Serengeti II yesterday but Seanan McGuire’s latest InCryptid came out so I had to read that instead.
If you missed Connie Willis’ Crosstalk last year, I adored it.

I hadn’t heard of Crosstalk at all! Added that to the wishlist, love the sound of the blurb.
Glad to have another vote for Ancillary Justice, I’m looking forward to it. I hope you enjoy Serengeti II and Small Angry Planet!
