I entered in #PitchWars this week, a writing contest where published/agented authors, editors, or interns choose one writer each, read their manuscript, and offer suggestions to shine it up for agents.
A few PitchWars mentees were doing #PimpMyBio, where they put up a little bit about themselves so that mentors can learn about us. There’s even a collected list of #PimpMyBios.
It seemed like fun, so, without further ado, here’s 5 Things You Need to Know About Emma.
1. I REALLY like tea.
I love tea, you guys. I really do. I am the most British of Brits, having a cup of tea in times of peril, or sleepiness, or just because it’s chilly.
Here’s the latest picture of my tea collection. I actually need to take a new photo of the changes that have occurred since then.
2. I am the most British of Brits, but also the most Scottish of Scots
Okay, I’ll never match up to a Glaswegian, but I have a strong patriotic street. Not politically–let’s not mention the tormented unicorn that is the current state of Scottish politics–but I’ll rave about haggis and bagpipes and fun Scottish desserts. This part of the country is beautiful and I love living here.
Fun fact: My family hails from the Western Isles, a lovely but flawed part of the country where religion is very strict and alcoholism is very high. Recently a church elder had to be suspended for transporting rams on a Sunday.
3. Also the geekiest of geeks
Works in IT? Check. Watches anime? Check. Can build a computer from scratch? Of course. Videogames? Of course. Comics? Yes, and I even have strong opinions about them.
I write long Tumblr posts defending Cersei and Sansa from Game of Thrones and Effie from The Hunger Games. I’m not only in multiple fandoms, but I’m in bandoms too. I know what Superwholock is and can go from Jensen Ackles to Eren Jaeger in a split second.
Sometimes I am Batman. On other nights, I’m more like Pikachu.
4. I suffer from CAPS LOCK ENTHUSIASM
I JUST. I JUST REALLY LIKE THINGS. I LIKE BEING EXCITED. I LIKE BEING EXCITED IN MY LOUD INTERNET VOICE.
IF YOU HAVE AN ARTSY THING THAT YOU CARE ABOUT I WILL ALSO CARE ABOUT IT. LOUDLY. IN CAPS LOCK.
5. I’m artsy sometimes
I draw lots of pictures related to my writing, and sometimes I commission artwork too. Here’s the pieces related to my current on-sub project, DIVIDE THE SKY.
I don’t pretend that my art is up to much, but I have fun drawing it and sharing it anyway.

Mmmmmm tea :)
And don’t knock yourself. You are a fantastic artist.
Thanks to Tumblr, I know what Superwholock is :D High five, fellow geek!
*high five* Superwholock is so ridiculous, and I love it. Whoever thought three totally different things could work together so well?
Lady, you are officially awesome. I will happily return your CAPS LOCK ENTHUSIASM about your artsy inclinations :)
Thank you so much, Jerry!
I’m wishing you all the luck of the Irish–er, Scottish and British–with your PitchWars submission!
Thank you Brooks!
Hi, Emma! Thanks for checking out my bio. My mother is DYING to go to Scotland. It seems like a beautiful country! The ram story is too funny…Good luck in Pitch Wars!
P.S. I like Sansa and Effie, too. ;)
Scotland is pretty, I can’t deny it. :D Good luck to you too!
Sansa and Effie are great. They might not be heroes but they do what they can, and they own their roles.
Mahoosive awesomeness. Best wishes to you! My MS for Pitch Wars includes Irn-Bru. Just sayin’.
SOLD. I WILL BUY FIFTY.
Miss E, I see and respect your tea collection. I live off of Adagio’s TARDIS tea. I think that at this point it makes up an alarming amount of my blood.
You’re a geek? Wait, you’re on Tumblr? YES. THAT IS THE LAND OF MY PEOPLE. I’m ahollowforest over there.
AHHH AND WE BOTH DRAW AND WORK WITH WINGED PEOPLE AHHHH. ALL THE LUCK TO YOU MAI FRAND.
TARDIS Tea sounds SO AMAZING. They recently brought over the Doctor Who sampler set to the UK and I’m loving it, but it doesn’t include the TARDIS sampler. *sulks* Cara McGee’s Captain Jack Harkness tea is amazing though, it’s my favourite out of the sampler so far, with Ten a close second.
I’ve just followed you on Tumblr! And an gleefully reblogging Attack on Titan references and pretty Madoka art. :D This is the land of my people indeed.
I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for you!
omg! you’re Scottish AND you drink tea AND you’re an artist??
you made my Top Favorite People list!!
*blushes* I-I can’t deal. Too much compliments how do I even THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
lol, how about we be friends in real life? I mean, Scotland is green, right? And Colorado is brown(ish). And Green and brown are friends, since they go great in my living room…just saying.
That seems like sound logic to me. Insta-friends! :)
LOVE your 5 Emma Facts! I can especially relate to your LOVE of tea and your ENTHUSIASM when it comes to using CAPS LOCK! :) Best of luck to you!!!! -Megan
Good luck to you in Pitch Wars too! I hope to visit Great Britain/Scotland someday!
Thank you! You should, it’s lovely. :)
I LOVE CAPS LOCK!!!!
You will also have to teach me about tea. Because I’ve only had marginal success liking it, but all the cool people in the world like it, so it’s obviously a skill I need.
Oooh, I would happily teach you about tea. What would you like to know? In all seriousness, send me any questions you have. :D
The trick with most teas is not to oversteep or understeep it (black teas should be steeped around 3 -4 minutes), and then to add milk and/or sugar/honey/sweetener to your tastes.
Yay tea!! And geekiness. Good luck with #pitchwars and all your writing!
You too, Carrie!
I recently developed a love for tea :)
Geek, Scottish, and artsy? That’s just too cool! Good luck with your pitchwars submission!
Good luck to you too! And welcome to the tea side. :)
Great drawings. I wish I were more talented art-wise. Unfortunately, I’ve got too many other things I want to do. So I’ll just enjoy other people’s art. :)
Good luck in Pitch Wars!
Good luck to you too! If you find the time, art’s definitely a worthwhile hobby. :) It’s very de-stressing and it’s fun to watch the visuals evolve over time.
What a fun bio! Great post! I love tea and Effie as well. Good luck on Pitch Wars. Not far off now!
Thanks for stopping by, and good luck to you too! I’ve added you on Twitter. :)
